Vidyasagar University, Midnapore (VU) was established by the Government of West Bengal under the Vidyasagar University Act, 1981. VU autonomous Institution, which is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), believes in the holistic development of students through quality education and attainment of proper knowledge.
Vidyasagar University, Midnapore has 27 postgraduate (PG) departments, 12 in Humanities and 15 in Science, with over 50 undergraduate (UG) colleges affiliated to the University. VU itself houses one UG department, Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.Lib.I.Sc), a 12-month course, and with 38 seats. UG or PG pass-out candidates of the current and the previous year are eligible to apply for the B.Lib.I.Sc. course. The Department of Library and Information Science at VU, Midnapore, has built a reputation for adapting the key concepts of library science—information organisation, access, use, and preservation—to the needs of the current information society. This natural integration of library and information science provides the potential to improve and strengthen learning, teaching, and research. The course curriculum is meant to help students comprehend the need for current technology fluency for all information professionals, including librarians, archivists, information architects, web developers, and data managers. The research programmes conducted here are primarily interdisciplinary in nature, with research problems incorporating ideas from Logic, Linguistics, Sociology, General System Theory, Environmental Studies, and Artificial Intelligence, facilitating expertise in information activities and providing an excellent opportunity to learn a variety of knowledge domains. The students get placed in every sector of the society's information activity, from rural libraries to school libraries, college and university libraries, R&D organisations, multinational corporate organisations, national and international organisations, and so on.

Focusing on an organic fusion of curricular and co-curricular activities, the Vidyasagar University Sports Committee organises various types of tournaments such as football, cricket, volleyball, kho-kho, kabaddi, athletics and chess throughout the year. VU has 2 boys’ and 2 girls’ hostels with capacities of 302 and 307 respectively, as well as health care services on campus. In addition to first-aid facilities, the health care centre has E.C.G. and ambulance access for students in case of emergencies.

Admission Procedure
Admission to Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, takes place through their official online portal. Interested candidates are to register by entering the required details and uploading the necessary documents. A list of selected candidates based on merit would be uploaded on the website, following which provisional admission can be done online. Verification of the documents is done at the departments after students visit campus for offline classes before final admission.
The Vidyasagar University, Midnapore offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral-level courses in a range of specializations. Aspirants must have completed their 10+2 or the equivalent from a recognized board to enroll in undergraduate courses.
