Utkal University, Bhubaneswar (UUB) is a government/public university situated in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. UUB is a University Grants Commission (UGC)-approved teaching-cum-affiliating university having jurisdiction over nine districts in Odisha. UUB is also the 17th-oldest university in the country and the oldest university in the state. Utkal University, Bhubaneswar was established on November 27, 1943.
The university traces its origins to the appointment of a committee to establish separate universities in Odisha and the subsequent passing of the Utkal University Bill by the Odisha Legislative Assembly on June 30, 1943, which came into force with the governor’s assent on August 2 and finally started functioning as a separate university on November 27, 1943. UUB is situated on a massive sprawling campus spanning an area of 399.9 acres in Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar.
