Rajalakshmi Educational Trust founded Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai in 1997. Mr. S. Meganathan, a mechanical engineer by trade and a very successful industrialist, served as the trust's chairman. Dr. (Mrs.) Thangam Meganathan, an educator and renowned career guidance advisor, and Mr. M. Abhay Shankar, a graduate in engineering from CEG, Anna University, and a postgraduate from Syracuse University, USA, are ably administering the trust.
REC Chennai is a self-governing college affiliated with Anna University that is recognized by the UGC and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in New Delhi. Every effort is made to uphold the highest standards when teaching technical knowledge and practical skills to students, ensuring that they become successful professionals with a wealth of competence. Sriperumbudur, on the Chennai–Bangalore national highway, in a peaceful setting, spread out across a vast area of approximately 50 acres, is perfect and suited for quiet and active learning toward a promising future. Leading multinational corporations (MNCs), like Hyundai Motors, Saint Gobain, and others, as well as the SIPCOT industrial park, supported by the Tamil Nadu government and housing many firms, are situated close to the campus, giving aspiring technocrats the ideal industrial environment. A total of more than 8 lakh square feet is set up to house all the classrooms, drawing halls, laboratories, workshops, tech lounge hosting more than 700 computers, administrative block, and reception. In the Academic Science Block, a computer facility with 120 computers is also provided, housing all the first-year students.
