During the British Rule in India when an irrigation system was felt necessary in the Doab region, the lands between Ganga and Yamuna rivers, because of the Agra famine resulting in death tolls of nearly 800,000, it required skilled manpower. This emergency period gave birth to the first engineering college of India as Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in 1847 with an objective to produce efficient engineers to construct a 500-km long canal. Later it received the recognition of the first engineering university of India during the post-independent era. With such a glorious history, the IIT, Roorkee is dedicated to provide a unique learning environment for students in the field of science and technology.

IIT, Roorkee is an autonomous institution which has been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). A number of world-class faculty members are dedicated to providing students with knowledge and proper guidance. Besides, the non teaching faculty assists the students in every way possible.

IIT, Roorkee is a co-ed institution which offers multiple undergraduate courses such as B.Arch; B.Tech in Biotechnology, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and Engineering Physics. Apart from this, the IIT, Roorkee also provides dual degree programs (UG and PG) like BS + MS in Mathematics and Computing, Physics, Chemical Sciences and Economics. Admission to IIT, Roorkee is conducted online. It is important for students to meet all the eligibility criteria. Candidates have to appear for the JEE advanced to get admission to B.Tech programmes and Dual Degrees. On the other hand, students are required to qualify for the NATA exam to get admitted to the B.Arch course. The admission procedure is based on scores obtained in the entrance examination.

Meritorious needy students are provided with a range of scholarships such as Merit-Cum-Means Scholarship and financial aid.

To be eligible for competing on global standards, students are provided with training including management, soft skills by the placement cell of IIT, Roorkee. Deloitte, HCL, IBM, Infosys, and ICICI Bank are among the top recruiters that take part in placement drives. In IIT, Roorkee placement drives observe the highest package of 1.54 CPA and an average of 64.28 LPA.

A traditional library with a vast collection of books, a digital library with e-resources and various course specific labs help students to broaden their excellence. Other major facilities offered by the IIT, Roorkee include separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls; on-campus WIFI access; smart classrooms with all IT facilities; indoor and outdoor sports facilities; seminar halls; an auditorium; on-campus ATM; and a cafeteria.

Admission Procedure

The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee’s admissions are conducted online mode. To apply for their undergraduate degrees, candidates must meet all the required eligibility requirements of the course for which they candidate is applying. The candidate has to go through the online admission process on the website. Most importantly the candidates must get a valid JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) Advanced score in order to be admitted to B.Tech and Dual Degree programmes. For the B.Arch program, the candidate must qualify the NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) exam. While the admission criteria and eligibility differ from course to course, all students must have passed their 10+2 school leaving test from a recognised board of secondary education. 

In addition, IIT Roorkee offers M.TECH./M.ARCH./MURP, M.Des, MSc, MBA, and PhD program. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in order to enrol in these courses. Students applying for admission to the M.Tech program must pass the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) entrance exam, while those applying for admission to the M.Des program must pass the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). Students applying for admission to the PhD program must have a master's degree with at least 60% of the required marks. Candidates for MBA programs must pass the Common Admission Test (CAT) admission exam.
