The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) was founded in 1994 and is recognised as an 'Institute of Eminence' by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

IIT Guwahati has a world-class infrastructure for conducting advanced research and is outfitted with cutting-edge scientific and engineering instruments. Since its inception, IIT Guwahati has been able to fulfil the aspirations of the people of the North East region to a large extent, in addition to its laurels in teaching and research. The campus life at IIT Guwahati provides students with a diverse range of opportunities. The campus community is very open to ideas and sharing when it comes to interacting with one another. Student diversity is one of the university's most valuable assets. Given its setting in the midst of nature, the beauty of the IIT Guwahati campus is breathtaking. The faculty are extremely well-educated and helpful to their students. They are deeply invested in the entire learning process and use a variety of engaging teaching methods in their classes.

IIT Guwahati has eleven departments, seven inter-disciplinary academic centres, and five schools that offer B.Tech., B.Des., M.A., M.Des., M.Tech., M.Sc., MBA, and PhD programmes in all major engineering, science, healthcare, management, and humanities disciplines. Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, and Bachelor of Design are among the undergraduate courses offered by the institute. To get admission to IIT Guwahati candidates must meet the eligibility criteria set by the official authorities and must qualify for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced. Students who are seeking admission to the Design course at IIT Guwahati have to appear for Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) conducted by the official authorities of the institute.

There is a bunch of scholarships and financial aids available for the students of B.Tech and B.Des which they can avail themselves, like 'Institute Merit Scholarship (IMS)', 'Institute Merit-cum-Means (McM)', 'Student Travel Assistance Fund (STAF)', 'Student Contingency Fund (SCF)', 'Student Childcare Assistance Fund (SCAF)', 'Students’ Brotherhood Fund (SBF)' and also the director of the institute have the authority to award scholarship to maximum 5 students annually on genuine means basis. There are also scholarships for SC/ST students. The Centre for Career Development (CCD) at the IIT Guwahati is in charge of administering all aspects of campus placements for graduating students from all Departments. CCD staff members organise Pre-Placement Talks, Written Tests, Group Discussions, Interviews, and so on in line with the demands of the Companies. 

The facilities provided by IIT Guwahati to students include The Lakshminath Bezbaroa Central Library that has a large number of old and latest printing resources for the sciences, engineering, technology, humanities and social sciences subjects, subscription to online journals and digital archives; 11 boys hostels and 2 girls hostels, all the accommodations are made in single-seater rooms; well-furnished departmental laboratories; a pocket-friendly cafeteria; high-speed internet in the campus; smart classrooms; conference halls and a sports complex.

Admission Procedure

The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati’s admissions are conducted online. To apply for their undergraduate degrees, candidates must meet all the required eligibility requirements of the course for which they are applying. The candidate has to go through the online admission process on the website. Most importantly the candidates must get a valid Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced) score in order to be admitted to Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes and for the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) degrees the students have to qualify for the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). While the admission criteria and eligibility differ from course to course, all students must have passed their 10+2 school leaving test from a recognised board of secondary education. Primarily admission to this institution takes place on the merit obtained in the aforesaid exams. 

A candidate must satisfy all eligibility requirements in order to be considered for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (M.Sc), Master of Design (M.Des), MS (Research), Master of Arts (M.A), Master of Business Administration (MBA) and dual degree programmes at IIT Guwahati. A candidate must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or technology in the relevant field for all the postgraduate courses. A valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) score is required for admission to M.Tech and MS (Research) programs. Admissions for M.Sc degrees are carried out on the basis of Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) and admissions for MBA are done through Common Admission Test (CAT). A candidate must possess a Master's degree in the pertinent field with 60% marks for the M.Tech-Phd, M.Sc-PhD and PhD programmes.

Placements

The Centre for Career Development (CCD) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati is in charge of managing all aspects of campus placements for graduating students from all Departments. The CCD is well-equipped with excellent infrastructure to assist with each stage of the placement process. The CCD staff members arrange Pre-Placement Talks, Written Tests, Group Discussions, Interviews, and so on in accordance with the needs of the Companies. Every year, approximately 88% of undergraduate students are placed.

Scholarships

The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati offers a number of scholarships. Some of which are the "Institute Merit Scholarship" which is available for BTech/BDes/MSc/MA students of the institute. The scholarship is meant for the year-wise class toppers of all the streams and is awarded from the second year. It includes tuition fee waiver and a fixed monthly stipend for eight months. The "Institute Merit-cum-Means" Scholarships is another such scholarship. The Director of IIT Guwahati can have special power to award a "Special Scholarship" to maximum of 5 students every year on a genuine means basis. While it is possible to award all 5 scholarships in a year in deserving cases, it may also not be awarded if there is no such cases.

IIT Guwahati allows students to avail of scholarships awarded by external Govt/non-Govt. organizations (such as central sector scholarship schemes, scholarships form state Govts., scholarships from private trusts etc.), provided they do not come into conflict with any ordinance or rules of the institute
