The Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI), Kolkata is located within the Kolkata Leather Complex. FDDI Kolkata is ISO Certified that has also been given an Institute of National Importance (INI) status by the ‘FDDI Act’ in 2017.

FDDI Kolkata offer a number of undergraduate courses for students wanting to specialise in leather work, footwear design, retail and merchandising. At the undergraduate level, students can apply for admission to their 4-year Bachelor’s degree or Bachelor of Design programs. These are three such programs covering Footwear Design and Production; Fashion Design; and Leather, Lifestyle and Product Design.

FDDI was set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India and Kolkata is their third campus. The institutes were set up to fill a long-standing gap in the country in education in the area of footwear development, design and retail.

The courses offered by FDDI Kolkata are akin to vocational courses in some way as they incorporate theoretical learning with creative workshops and real-life training and interactions with industry professionals.

FDDI Kolkata has a well-stocked and updated library at its students’ disposal, as well as a number of Hi-Tech labs and high-speed internet connections. They also have smart classrooms and an open-air amphitheatre.

FDDI Kolkata also offers sports and leisure facilities, in addition to a hygienic and affordably priced cafeteria. There is also a dedicated medical team on campus, as well as hostel accommodation available to students.

Admissions are conducted online and on the basis of the All India Selection Tests (AIST). Students who have completed their school leaving examinations are eligible to apply.

Admission Procedure

Footwear Design and Development Institute, Kolkata offers three undergraduate courses in design (B.Des). All candidates for undergraduate admissions must submit an online application for the FDDI All India Selection Test (FDDI-AIST), followed by counselling. Each and every qualified applicant would need to pass a test (Paper Based Test) given by FDDI. Only English will be used as the test's medium. All qualified candidates must appear at the examination centres they select for the written entrance examination in the city of their choice. The written admission exam aims to evaluate candidates' knowledge, aptitude, and suitability for the chosen program. 

Faculty

The faculty at Footwear Design and Development Institute, Kolkata is skilled and experienced, which motivates students to achieve their best potential. In association with Academia, R & D, and practising staff, the faculty creates printed self-educational materials. Through collaboration with the faculty members on diverse real-world projects, students develop their skills and knowledge while learning essential information about design applications and market dynamics. The professors have training from some of the top fashion schools in the world as well as from FDDI, bringing to the classroom their professional skills, extensive exposure, and years of practical experience.

The C&PR department of Footwear Design and Development Institute, Kolkata welcomes reputable national and multinational organizations to participate in internships and student placements across all campuses and courses. Scholarships

Footwear Design and Development Institute, Kolkata offers multiple scholarships such as "Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme for Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles is a Central Governments scholarship" that is available. The other state government also provides scholarships such as "Merit-Cum-Means Scholarship for Professional and Technical Courses", "Mukhyamantri Nishchay Swayam Sahayata Bhata Yojana (MNSSBY)" along with Sant Nirankari Charitable Foundation provided to the students.
