The Cotton University (CU) is a Government Public University in Assam. The University was formerly known as Cotton College which was established in 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of the erstwhile British province of Assam. It is also the oldest institution of higher education in Assam. Later on it became a constituent college of Gauhati University in 1948 and the Cotton College State University aka. Cotton University was established in 2017.

CU Guwahati offers graduation degree courses in various subjects like B.A in Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi, English Urdu, Arabic, History etc. and B.Sc in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and IT, Geology, Zoology, Geography etc. making Cotton University an enriched platform for higher learning and research. Before the establishment of the CU Guwahati the institution was a college and even after the upgradation they are very much concern with the preservation of the intellectual legacy from 1901. They also publish newsletters and university magazines to cultivate their history and knowledge practices.

Admission Procedure

The admission process goes through both online and offline modes. An applicant has to go through the application, be shortlisted in the merit list, give the entrance exam and qualify and after passing the cut-off marks an applicant of the Bachelor’s degree course is eligible to get admission.
There is a short rule about the admission process which is a combined score from the Higher Secondary Exam or equivalent and Cotton University Entrance Exam (CUGEE). The principle Formula is- Final Merit Score of a candidate=Score in CUGEE plus 40% of Total Marks (English + 4 best other subjects) secured out of 500 in the qualifying exam or on the basis of merit in the qualifying exams i.e. Higher Secondary or equivalent if CUGEE gets cancelled.

Faculty

Cotton University has a list of highly qualified professors to teach Science subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Botany, Zoology, Geology, Geography etc., Arts Subjects like Languages and Literature (Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi, English, Arabic etc.) Linguistics, Social Sciences subjects like Anthropology, History, Education, Political Science, Economics etc. Apart from their own faculty list they also invite professors to give lectures for their students in various subjects as well.

Placements

The CUG has a placement cell on their campus as well as they have a section on their website, where they help the students, providing notifications of various open posts from government and private jobs.



Scholarships

Bachelor's Degree students can avail themselves of the National Student Scholarships, and Poor Students' Aid Fund while studying at the university.
