Tinsukia, May 1: Dibrugarh police today arrested a chartered accountant, Sanjay Jain, for allegedly threatening witnesses at gunpoint from speaking against him in an inquiry, initiated by the district administration.

Dibrugarh additional superintendent of police Surjeet Panesar told The Telegraph that a case (no. 493/2017 under Section 384/506 IPC) was registered at Dibrugarh Sadar police station against Sanjay on the basis of a complaint by Shailesh Jain.

"His interrogation is on," Panesar said.

According to sources, the case is related to a dispute between two sections of a community in Dibrugarh, the Digamber Jain Samaj, Graham Bazar branch, and Digamber Jain Samaj, Naya Bazar branch.

Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Laya Madduri said: "Based on a report against Sanjay Jain and Rajiv Jain by local police, an inquiry under Section 107 of CrPC had been initiated against them."

Sanjay, Rajiv and Vicky, who are siblings, have allegedly been threatening a group of people belonging to a particular community in Dibrugarh town.

Sources said there were multiple reports against Sanjay and Rajiv and there was another inquiry, based on a separate complaint, going on against them. "Based on the outcome of the report by the subdivisional magistrate, the deputy commissioner directed Rajiv Jain to deposit his .32 NP bore pistol number 693500 immediately with Dibrugarh Sadar police station in the interest of public safety and peace," a source said.

Rajiv deposited a .32 bore pistol with the local police station later today.

The Telegraph has learnt that Rajiv obtained an arms licence in 2005.

There have been allegations that Sanjay was using the name of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal while threatening people and even using his professional links with income tax officers to get raids conducted.
