Jorhat, June 9: A poor response to the directive that landlords should furnish details of tenants — even after the form was uploaded on the Jorhat police website more than six months ago — has prodded police to come up with ways to create more awareness.
Amanjeet Kaur, superintendent of police here, said it was mandatory that landlords fill up the form giving details of the tenants. However, the number of people doing so was negligible, she added.
“We decided to make things easier for the landlords so that they could sit at home and fill up the form but this, too, has not yielded the desired results,” she said.
Now, the police are making it a point to let all those who come to police stations or meet while doing their rounds know about it. “We have not started a door-to-door campaign yet,” she said.
Hinting that the stress was as much on weeding out illegal migrants as criminals, Kaur said in case an arrest was made, and the person turned out to be an illegal migrant or criminal, the landlord would be held responsible.
Kaur agreed that the poor response might have stemmed from people not wanting the police to know of this additional income. “This could be one of the reasons,” she said.
