Guwahati, Sept. 13: The much awaited air-conditioned indoor stadium of the proposed Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex in Amingaon will finally be open to the sporting fraternity in November.
In terms of conceptualisation the ambitious project is considered to be one of the most modern ones.
Even though the project was launched in 1995, its construction started only last year in November after the government accorded administrative approval and released Rs 10 crore for implementing the project.
The completion of this one- of-a-kind sports facility will be highly beneficial for the people of Amingaon and adjoining areas like North Guwahati, Jalukbari and Changsari.
Chief executive officer of Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Ashish Bhutani, said that by the rate at which the work is going on, they are confident about completing the project by November before the 33rd National Games.
?We are confident of meeting the deadline as nearly 50 per cent of the work has been completed. The funds have not been a constraint in this project as Rs 20 crore out of the total Rs 24.68 crore has already been released by the state government,? he said.
Of the balance amount earmarked in the current year?s budget, Rs 10 crore has been released and the rest is expected to be released shortly.
GMDA has engaged STUP Consultants of Mumbai for architectural and structural design and project monitoring services. The construction is being carried out by Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Ltd.
The scope of work for STUP Consultants includes a complete masterplan of the sports complex, including an athletic stadium with 25,000 to 30,000 capacity, an aquatic complex and related services like water supply, electrification, building management services, land development and the like.
According to the GMDA, the stadium is expected to accommodate nearly 2,500 people along with the provision for a front stage.
