Militants release hostages

Two senior officials of the North Cachar Hills-based Umrangshu Cement factory who had been abducted jointly by suspected Karbi and Hmar militant groups from the company?s production centre six months back were freed by the militants on Saturday. n NC Hills police source said the two senior officers, Himendra Gogoi and Sunaram Chetia, were released at dawn on Saturday and have reached home safely.

Rock concert

Grammy Award-winning rock band from America, Firehouse, will perform in Shillong on Monday at the Jawaharlal Nehru sports complex. The show was earlier scheduled for Saturday but had to be postponed as some band members could not get visa clearance.

Mizo budget

Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga said the Centre has accepted the state?s proposal for a Rs 685-crore plan budget for 2005-06.

New rail GM

A.K. Sanwalka has been posted as the new general manager of Northeast Frontier Railway.

Oil protest

The Oil Fields Protection Sangram Samiti, Assam, will stage a dharna at Dispur on Tuesday against the government?s decision to hand over the Amgurioil field to a Canadian company.

Bandh

The Khasi Students? Union has called a 20-hour Meghalaya bandh from 7 pm on Tuesday in protest against alleged state government inaction regarding their long-pending demands on issues like influx and reservation.

Memorandum

The Meghalaya Veterinary Services Association has submitted a memorandum to chief minister D.D. Lapang for establishment of a slaughter house.

Road mishap

Two persons, D.N. Sunar, M. Sanju, and a nine-month-old baby, died in an accident on Saturday night near Barik in Shillong. Six other persons are said to be injured and in a very critical condition. The accident is said to have occurred due to rash driving. The injured have been shifted to the civil hospital in Shillong and are undergoing treatment.
