Guwahati: Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi took exception to xatradhikars participating in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activities in Assam, saying it predicted a bleak future for Vaishnavite culture in the state.
Gogoi's move came after many xatradhikars participated in the Luitporiya Hindu Samabesh on Sunday here.
"I am also proud to be a Hindu. For us Hinduism means humanism. But the RSS does narrow politics in the name of Hindutva in the country. It is pathetic to see that some xatradhikars have joined hands with the RSS. It is a sign of the bleak future for the Assamese society and Vaishnavite culture. These people may not have studied the works and philosophy of Xankardeb," Gogoi said.
Gogoi said, "People from all religions live in Assam with great harmony. But the RSS's politics will hamper this. It will lead to riots, which directly impacts the social and economical scenario of the state.
"RSS said the meeting was a religious meet, but we have seen that it was a totally political one. They have organised it only because of the upcoming Assembly elections in the Northeast."
Gogoi also questioned the BJP's double standards over the issue of development. "BJP says sabka sath sabka vikas. But they give more importance to the development of Hindus. Mohan Bhagwat said every Indian born is a Hindu. So does he mean to say all Pakistan born people are Muslims or all born in England are Christians? Such thinking of the RSS will harm the entire society."
