June 13: A few days after the government announced that it would install 20 closed-circuit television cameras in different parts of the city as a security measure, the zoo has decided to follow suit.
Somewhere inside hidden from public view, a CCTV will keep an eye on the visitors. “This is just on an experimental basis and if its proves beneficial we may install more cameras at some more locations,” said Narayan Mahanta, divisional forest officer of Assam state zoo.
Mahanta said the camera would not only keep watch over visitors but also keep an eye on the staff posted at the gates, who frisk people.
With more than 1,000 people visiting the zoo daily, it has become imperative to keep watch. The DFO will monitor the images from his room. Recording facility will also be introduced.
The guards at the entrance have been instructed to keep the gates slightly ajar and not completely open and frisk every vehicle.
“There is no harm in using technology if it benefits us,” a zoo official said adding it is being done to minimise risks to both staff and visitors.
The poaching attempt on a rhino last year shocked the zoo, which forced them to beef up security and bring in more Assam forest protection force personnel.
