Guwahati, July 23: Two upsets marked the first day of the OIL-AITA Super Series’ under-14 and under-16 Tennis Championship that got under way at the All Assam Tennis Association complex here today.
Shrey Gupta of Haryana caused the biggest upset of the day, shocking fourth seed Bengal boy Sanil Jagtiani 7-6 (5), 6-2 in an under-14 boys’ singles first round match.
The under-14 girls’ courts also witnessed an upset when unseeded Gujarat girl Shivani Ingle got the better of eighth seed Kaaviya Balasubramanian of Tamil Nadu 7-5 (6), 6-2 in a first round match.
On an overcast day, most of the players played very good tennis which enthralled the crowd that gathered to witness some of the most promising players of the country take the field. While most of the Assam boys cruised into the second round, some the girls tumbled in the under-14 singles first round held today.
