
Amguri, May 10: A day after the Assam government announced financial aid for the differently-abled in Majuli, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal today made similar announcements in Amguri in Sivasagar district.
At the function today, Sonowal said the state government would give Rs 5,000 as one-time aid to the differently-abled and Rs 1,000 monthly allowance for the treatment and rehabilitation of disable persons from next year.
Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar attended the programme. He promised to help the state government in empowering the physically challenged.
Altogether 1,632 differently-abled persons were handed over different types of aids and assistive devices at the event.
These devices are manufactured by the Kanpur-based Alimco Kanpur.
"In Assam, there are more than 4 lakh persons with disabilities. The government has taken a decision to help them to get treatment and give them the aids and assistive items such as a wheelchair, smartphone or hearing aids," Sonowal said at the function.
The state government has allotted Rs 250 crore for this in this fiscal.
Alimco CMD D.R. Sarin, Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLAs of Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charideo districts were present at the event.
Sonowal said the government has taken steps for the improvement of Upper Assam.
An Indian Agriculture Institute will be set up in Dhemaji district, he added.
