The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are public technical institutes owned by the Ministry of Education, Central Government of India. Established on August 15, 2007, via the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, the government-funded institutes are autonomous establishments linked to one another through the Council of NITSER. 

The NITs are deemed as “Institutions of National Importance (INIs)” through the governing “National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research Act, 2007”. The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are highly coveted premier engineering establishments in India, ranking second only after the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
