Rajah Serfoji Government College, Thanjavur (RSGC Thanjavur) is the oldest college in the country, delivering quality higher education to people from all walks of life. RSGC Thanjavur, which was founded in the Thanjavur district of the Cauvery delta in 1955 with the intention of meeting the educational requirements of the economically, socially, and educationally underprivileged parts of society, has since offered higher education to everyone. In 2004, the UGC awarded RSGC Thanjavur autonomy. Since that time, RSGC Thanjavur has been creating the students' curriculum and syllabi in accordance with the requirements given by the UGC and Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli.

In order to prepare rural students for the challenge of the rural-urban gap in the areas of employment prospects and entrepreneurship, RSGC Thanjavur is also a pioneering institution in delivering excellent higher education to rural students. RSGC Thanjavur offers UG, PG, and doctorate courses. For UG admission, candidates must pass HSC(10+2) from any board. And for PG admission, candidates must complete a bachelor's degree and for Ph.D. admission, postgraduation is needed.
