Established in 1985 by Prof. P. Murugesan, Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science and Technology, Thanjavur (PRIST Thanjavur) was initially known as the Institute of Computer Science and Technology, founded with the purpose of providing computer education to the Thanjavur District. Subsequently, in 1988, PRIST Thanjavur affiliated with Bharathidasan University to offer postgraduate diploma programs in computer applications, thus resulting in the expansion of the institute to include an Arts and Science College, College of Engineering and Technology, College of Education, Research Institution, and Polytechnic College. Now PRIST Thanjavur has been recognized as a UGC, Aicte, and NCTE-approved deemed-to-be-university.
