Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Patna, was first established in 1874 as Temple Medical School, which was later relocated and in its place, The Prince of Wales Medical College was established in 1925. The Institute was finally renamed PMCH and is considered one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia, and the sixth oldest in British-occupied India. PMCH serves as the mainstay for medical education and treatment for the masses not only in this state but also in neighbouring states.
PMCH is approved by the National Medical Council (NMC) and is affiliated to the Aryabhatta Knowledge University, Patna. PMCH offers 1 undergraduate (UG), 4 diploma (DIP) and 27 postgraduate (PG) courses. The UG course is MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), while the DIP courses are in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases, Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, and Micobiology. PMCH has all the necessary infrastructure to ensure the best training and all-round development of the medicos. PMCH Library has a collection of over 6000 books and 120 journals, along with a digital section which offers members access to a host of e-resources. The medicos are provided accommodations in separate hostels for boys and girls. There are a total of 10 hostels, with 258 single-bedded rooms and 262 double-sharing rooms. PMCH has specialised state-of-the-art laboratories that students avail for practical lessons, as well as seminar halls for many academic and social events, and a hygienic cafeteria which serves nutritious food.
