Nava Nalanda Mahavihara (NNM), Nalanda was established in 1951 under the name of Magadh Institute of Post-Graduate Studies in Pali and Allied Languages and Buddhist Learning. The drive behind the establishment of NNM was to revive the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara, an ancient Buddhist University which functioned between the 5th and 12th centuries AD. The vision of restarting an educational institute at Nalanda was of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India.

The current Mahavihara campus is located about 100 kilometres from Patna, on the southern bank of the historical lake Indrapuskarani. The ruins of the ancient University of Nalanda can be found close to the northern bank.

NNM offers 1 undergraduate (UG), 3 diploma (DIP), 8 postgraduate (PG), 2 postgraduate diploma (PG DIP), and 10 doctorate (PhD) courses. The UG course is BA(Hons) in Pali; and the diplomas are in Pali, Tibetan Studies, and Chinese. The PG courses are MA in Pali, Philosophy, Ancient History and Culture and Archaeology, Buddhist Studies, Sanskrit, Hindi, English, and Tibetan Studies; while the PG diplomas are in Vipassana and Yoga, and Buddhist Heritage and Tourism Management. Students can pursue their PhDs from NNM in Pali, Philosophy, Ancient History and Culture and Archaeology, Buddhist Studies, Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Tibetan Studies, Chinese, and Japanese.

Classes are conducted by highly experienced faculty members who work tirelessly towards imparting quality education. Applications for admission can be collected by interested students from the office on the NNM Campus.

NNM provides the best available infrastructure to ensure the holistic growth of young minds. The Central Library Building houses the Indological Library which has a collection of 67000 books including several Xylographic Tibetan Manuscripts, and other manuscripts and gratis books. Students are provided separate accommodations for boys and girls at NNM. There are 3 hostels for boys and 1 for girls, with a compulsory mess facility in all. Hostel seats are provided on the basis of merit. NNM recognises the importance of an active lifestyle and has numerous indoor and outdoor game facilities. NNM Boat Club also hosts many water sports for all to participate. A fully-equipped gymnasium is present on the NNM Campus for the students to avail.

Regular classes are conducted in spacious classrooms. For practical lessons, students can avail of an air-conditioned Computer Lab with 25 latest set-ups and internet and AV facilities. NNM is fully Wi-Fi enabled and has a cafeteria, medical facility, and multimedia-equipped seminar halls for the students and staff to avail.

Admission Procedure

The candidates should collect the application forms from the office of the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda. Candidates are required to make separate applications for applying in separate courses. The candidates shall fill up the application form and submit it to the office of the Registrar, NNM along with the requisite documents and the application fees. The eligible candidates should qualify in the Admission Test / Proficiency Test conducted by the University for admission in the various courses.

Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda provides merit-based scholarships to the students. The scholarships is available to every courses and it allows 10 students from each course.
