Dedicated to fostering quality technical education across the country, the National Institute of Technology, Silchar laid its foundation stone in 1967.
The NIT, Silchar is a government-run institute that is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) is considered to be a ‘Deemed University’.

The NIT, Silchar is a co-ed institution which offers undergraduate courses such as B.Tech in Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering. Students willing to take admission to the institute must appear for the Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE-Main). Candidates must have passed their 10+2 school leaving test from a recognised board of secondary education with the necessary marks. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) / Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts a Common Counseling Process for students.
A range of scholarships are available for students at the NIT, Silchar. Scholarship schemes under the Bharti Infratel Scholarship Program (BISP) for students with disabilities pursuing education in Government recognized Institute of National Importance (INI) located in North-East India, Hakim Abdul Hameed Scholarship/Financial aid and many more are among the scholarships that the institution offers.

Admission Procedure
The National Institute of Technology, Silchar runs an admission procedure for the students (co-ed) in courses of Engineering (B.Tech) based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) via the JoSAA/CSAB portal. Candidates must go to the examination website's official webpage to receive the necessary information and apply. Following their participation, candidates must get the required qualifying marks to meet the NIT, Silchar's cut-off to register in the appropriate course, followed by the candidates' final admission procedure with the admission fee payment.
NIT Silchar also offers M.Tech, M.Sc, MBA and PhD courses. To be admitted to the M.Tech programme, candidates must have earned the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and have the required degree grades. Candidates for the MBA programme are required to possess a Bachelor's degree with at least a 55% average as well as a valid score in any one of the exams- Common Admission Test (CAT)/ Management Aptitude Test (MAT) / Common Management Admission Test (CMAT). Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) scores are used for all M.Sc. programme admissions. Students who want to pursue a PhD must already have earned a master's degree in a related discipline with a minimum of 60% of marks.

The National Institute of Technology, Silchar has a T&P (Training and Placement) Cell that not only facilitates training and placement but also works towards the entire development of the students. It operates with the help of the FIC and the Training and Placement Officer. It primarily serves as a point of contact between the institute and companies like Microsoft, Ericsson, ABB, Tata Consultancy Services, etc. The T&P Cell has a great infrastructure and is well-equipped to serve the students throughout the whole placement process.
