NIT Rourkela is one of the top national institutions for technical education in India funded by the Government of India. It is the 2nd largest government Institute in eastern India having a huge infrastructure on 700 acres of land. Established in 1961, It has grown from a single building housing to a mega facility that supports around 7500 students, 350 faculties, 300 staff and their family members.

NIT Rourkela has ranked 3rd position (Engineering Category) and 1st position (Research Category) amongst NITs in NIRF Ranking 2021. With 20 academic disciplines in multi-disciplinary and emerging areas, it is one of the few institutes with departments like Food process engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Industrial Design, Life Science, and Management. Recently adding a few new research centres namely Poverty Alleviation, Excellence on Public Health Nutrition, Space Technology Incubation and IoT and Embedded Technologies, it has now become a hub of 13 centres for research activity in different fields. Foundation for Technology & Business Incubation housed under NITR today incubates 50+ start-ups and 30+ pre-incubation teams.

The institute features highly trained faculty team members who lead students in the right direction. All of the skills needed to be successful in the technological field are provided to students by the faculty members following both academic and practical methods. It is a co-ed institution that presently offers multiple undergraduate courses such as B.Tech in Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Food Process Engineering, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mining Engineering; B.Arch; and dual degrees comprising undergraduate and postgraduate both : B.Tech + M.Tech (Dual Degree) in Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Industrial Ceramic, Computer Science, Information Security, VLSI Design and Embedded system, Communication and Signal Processing, Communication and Networks, Electronic Systems and Communication, Power Control and Drives, Control and Automation, Power Electronics and Drive, Mechatronics and Automation, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Mining Engineering.

Candidates must have passed 10+2 examination to be eligible for admission to the institute. Students willing to take admission have to appear for the Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE-Main). Seat allocation process at NIT, Rourkela is operated by the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB). Students are provided with a range of scholarship schemes like national level scholarships like Post-Matric Scholarships and Merit Scholarships by Orissa Government, National Talent Scholarship and many more.

The Career Development Center of NIT, Rourkela assists students gain placement opportunities. A good relationship between the cell and many reputable companies helps students to enter into the professional world. To prepare students for interviews pre-placement meetings, written tests, group discussions and interviews are organized by the cell. Placement drives at NIT, Rourkela observe the highest package of 42 LPA and an average of 8.75 LPA.

The basic amenities provided by the institute include a large library; a digital library having E-Resources; course specific labs; separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls; access to Dilip Trackey stadium, Sachin Tendulkar Cricket Ground as outdoor sports facilities; spacious classrooms; a health center; on-campus ATM; shuttle services and a hygienically maintained cafeteria.

Admission Procedure

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is a technique used by the NIT, Rourkela to help applicants with the admissions process (co-ed). Students will be admitted to any of the Institute's academic programmes of Engineering and Architecture courses through a single application process using the National Testing Agency's Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE-Main). Candidates must have obtained the required marks in the 10+2 class, as established by the various Boards, in order to be eligible for admission to the institute. The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB), also known as Common Counselling, enables the process of collaborative seat allocation in order to admit competent candidates to the Institute. NIT Rourkela also offers postgraduate degrees in M.Tech, M.Sc, MBA and  PhD. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score is used to identify candidates for the M.Tech programme. Candidates with valid Common Admission Test (CAT) scores may enrol in an MBA programme.

Placements

The NIT, Rourkela's Career Development Center, which is headed by a senior faculty member being the Head of the centre. HoC and his team consisting other faculties and staff along with student placement committee who manages placement operations and maintains contact with various industrial organisations and research institutions. A student placement committee made up of students picked from various disciplines collaborates closely with the department. The Institute's Career Development Center plays a major role in assisting graduates from all Departments in finding employment. Its superb infrastructure facilitates the organisation of pre-placement meetings, written tests, group discussions, interviews, etc. as part of the placement processes at each and every level.
