National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Chennai opened its doors to its first batch of students in the year 1995. The state of the art campus, equipped with the latest fashion technology is committed to providing a holistic education to students who enrol here to learn Fashion with Design, Technology and Management.

The undergraduate courses offered at the NIFT Chennai campus are B.Des in Fashion Design, Accessory Design, Leather Design, Knitwear Design, Textile Design, and Fashion Communication; B.FTech - Apparel Production; and diploma courses in Fashion Fit and Style, Textile CAD, and Fashion and Retail Store Operations. All courses besides the diplomas are 4 years in duration. The diploma courses are 2 years in duration. Students enrolled in the courses are supported by skilled and experienced faculty having extensive industry experience and exposure. They follow innovative teaching methodologies, preparing students for working in fast-paced professional environments. All NIFTs conduct a cumulative admission procedure. Application forms must be filled out online followed by payment of application fee. The Creative Ability Test (CAT), the General Ability Test (GAT), and the Situation Test round make up the NIFT Entrance Exam. GAT is the selection criteria used particularly for admissions to B.F.Tech. Meritorious students from economically weaker backgrounds can apply for NIFT's Means-cum-Merit Financial Assistance plan or for the scholarships given out of the NIFT Development Fund. The NIFTs across the country have a centralised placement cell, which organises on-campus placements, pre-placement offers and off-campus placements. Top designers, as well as companies from the FMCG, journalism, and media industries, provide job opportunities to students at NIFT placements. H&M, Bata India Ltd, Raniwala Jewellers Pvt. Ltd, Go Colors, and Decathlon are among the leading companies who recruit from the NIFT campuses.

To support students in their learning journey, NIFT Chennai maintains a well-stocked library with a large number of books, periodicals, and magazine – both print and digital – that is continually updated. Students gain practical hands-on experience at the Computer lab, Weaving lab, Pattern Making and Draping lab, Dyeing and Printing lab, Knitwear labs, Garment Technology lab, Accessory Design workshop, Leather Design lab, Mac lab, Photography studio, and Graphic design studio. Well-equipped classrooms on campus make learning fun and interactive. The campus also features 2 auditoriums, a conference hall, and sports facilities. The Wi-Fi enabled campus also has medical facilities, an ATM, and a cafeteria. Students looking for accommodation can apply for a places at the separate boys and girls hostels near campus.

Admission Procedure

B.Des, B.F.Tech, UG-Diploma, PG-Diploma, and other post-graduate courses are some of the programmes available at NIFT Chennai. Aside from that, NIFT offers a variety of Continuing Education Programs (CEP). The NIFT Entrance Exam is used to determine admission to UG programmes. The Creative Ability Test (CAT), the General Ability Test (GAT), and the Situation Test round make up the NIFT Entrance Exam. GAT is the selection criteria for B.F.Tech. Admission is merit-based for undergraduate diploma courses. 

A Bachelor's degree or its equivalent is required of applicants for admission to the Master of Fashion Management (MFM) and Master of Fashion Technology (MFT), as well as strong performance in the GAT and CAT portions of the NIFT Entrance Exam, which are followed by a round of personal interviews.

The faculty of NIFT Chennai, is a critical enabler in bringing the institute's goal to life. The professors, who have received their education at some of the world's most prestigious fashion institutes, bring to the classroom professional abilities, a broad range of experience, and years of hands-on industry experience. Faculty at NIFT develop critically engaged teaching approaches while putting them to the test in a variety of initiatives and circumstances. Students obtain vital knowledge, experience, and awareness of design application and industry dynamics by working with faculty on diverse real-life projects, enhancing their expertise and developing their talent.

Placements

Campus Placements at the National Institute of Fashion Technology provides a platform for graduating students from diverse disciplines in two-year postgraduate and four-year undergraduate programs to achieve their professional hopes and objectives, and consequently requires employer organizations' active and persistent participation. The placement process of NIFTs are centralised. Companies can hire students from any of the NIFT campuses or courses through three channels that the institute facilitates: on-campus placements, pre-placement offers, and off-campus placements. Top designers, as well as companies from the FMCG, journalism, and media industries, provide job opportunities to students at NIFT placements. Scholarships

Every year, a significant amount of money from the NIFT Development Fund is put to good use in the area of scholarship. "NIFT's Means-cum-Merit Financial Assistance" plan allows students from low-income families to receive reduced tuition at any of its campuses in order to maximise their potential.
