The NID Amendment Act, 2019, passed by the Parliament of India, saw the National Institute of Design, Assam (NID Assam) become an autonomous Institution of National Importance, under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India. With the mandate to award the Bachelor’s degree in Design, NID Assam commenced its academic session on 29th July 2019 and has since been providing Design Education.

A full-time, four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) degree in Textile and Apparel Design, Industrial Design, and Communication Design is offered at NID Assam.  Admission to the B.Des program will be awarded based on the Common Design Aptitude Test. 

The students at NID Assam are given great faculty support. The highly qualified professors with extensive subject-area knowledge and competence give the students in-depth knowledge of the subject's many facets. Under the direction of the acclaimed faculty, the students receive extensive instruction on the various characteristics of managerial study and research in addition to hands-on learning opportunities.

Situated on 30 acres of land in Jorhat, the campus of NID Assam is ready and fully operational, complete with the necessary infrastructure. With architecture that is unique to the region and a layout that reflects creative energy, the NID Assam campus is a natural and inviting environment with plenty of fresh air. NID Assam also has well-furnished classrooms, a multipurpose hall, a library, a cafeteria, and a workshop.  The NID Assam has several design studios that are equipped with the latest technology and design tools to provide students with a conducive environment to explore their creativity. These studios cater to different design disciplines and provide students with ample space to work on their projects. The Clay-Ceramic Studio at NID Assam is equipped with pottery wheels, kilns, and other pottery tools. The studio enables students to experiment with different types of clay and create unique ceramic designs. The Model Making Studio at NID Assam is equipped with various modeling tools and equipment. The studio enables students to create physical models of their designs and bring their ideas to life. The Wood & Bamboo Workshop is equipped with various woodworking and bamboo processing tools and equipment. The workshop enables students to experiment with different materials and create unique designs using sustainable and eco-friendly materials. Metal Workshop: The metal workshop at NID Assam is equipped with the latest metalworking tools and equipment. The workshop allows students to work with different metals, such as steel, aluminum, and copper, and create innovative designs. The design library at NID Assam is an essential resource for students, faculty, and researchers. The library houses a vast collection of books, journals, magazines, and other design-related publications. NID Assam has facilities for various outdoor and indoor sports like football, basketball, badminton, and swimming, besides a fully equipped gymnasium. The NID Assam provides separate hostel facilities for girls and boys.

Admission Procedure

National Institute of Design, Assam offers a full-time, four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) degree in three different specializations - Textile and Apparel Design, Industrial Design, and Communication Design. 

Admission to the B.Des programme will be based on the scores obtained in the National Institute of Design-Design Aptitude Test (NID-DAT). Candidates must have finished their 10+2 in any stream in order to be admitted to the B.Des programme at NID Assam.
