Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research, Kolkata (IPGMER, Kolkata) is the foremost established hospital in Kolkata which laid its foundation stone in 1707 on the grounds of the Old Fort at Gerstein Place with a single story structure by the Fort William Council. Since inception, the hospital was there to be served only for the sake of Europeans, with the name Presidency Hospital. The hospital became known as Presidency General Hospital or PG hospital as located near the Presidency Jail. In 1954 after the independence of India it was renamed as Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital in memorial of the great donor Sukhlal Karnani. Since then, it is regarded as SSKM Hospital. After the independence of India, the government of India in a need of a post graduate medical learning center established the first Post Graduate Medical Institute in Eastern India in 1957, at PG Hospital. The Indian medical graduates.
On 16th January 1957, the hospital came into existence with the cristening "The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER)" and was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. Since then, the institute is successfully forebearing immense excellence and eminence as a Medical Learning Centre and a Specialty Hospital. IPGMER, Kolkata offers undergraduate, post graduate and post doctoral courses, a few specialist medical degrees and diplomas, para medical courses, nursing courses. IPGMER, Kolkata is regarded as the Bethlehem of advanced medical research. The admission is conducted in an online mode. The students are selected strictly based on their merit and eligibility criteria. The faculties strive hard to rear the valuable mission of the institution of raising educational professionals through value-based learning through a pleasurable pedagogy. The teachers take continuous theoretical and practical assessments in order to ensure the correct evaluation of each of the students.
