Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna was founded on November 19, 1983, as an autonomous organisation modelled after the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. The goal was to provide super speciality medical services in the state of Bihar, and the state government transferred 130 acres of land to IGIMS via a resolution. IGIMS is an autonomous Institute, recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
IGIMS Patna offers 9 undergraduate (UG), 9 diploma (DIP), and 31 postgraduate courses. The UG courses that can be availed at the Institute are: MBBS; B.Sc. in Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Forensic Science, Neuro-Technology, Cardiac Technology; Bachelor of Optometry; Bachelor of Physiotherapy; and Post Basic B.Sc. in Nursing. The diploma courses that students can pursue at IGIMS are in General Nursing and Midwifery, Medical Record Technology, Urological Technology, Neuro-Technology, Operation Theatre Assistant Technology, Cardiac Technology, Dialysis Technology, Endoscopy Technology, and Medical Radiotherapy.
A comprehensive Hospital Waste Management System has been set up by IGIMS, to treat waste generated by the healthcare centres operating from the city of Patna and its neighbouring areas as per provisions made under the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rule of 2016. The uniquely developed Incinerator System to treat solid wastes is the only one of its kind in Bihar and the eastern region of the country. It has a combustion efficiency of 99% and can incinerate waste at a rate of 250 kg per hour. The On-Line Monitoring System is also deployed and is linked to the servers of the Central Pollution Control Board in Delhi and the Bihar State Pollution Control Board in Patna for surveillance of the Incinerator System's various parameters as well as stack emission.
IGIMS provides the best available infrastructure to ensure the all-round development of the students. IGIMS Library has a large collection of books and journals, and also subscribes to multiple newspapers and magazines. The Digital Section of the Library provides members access to a host of audio-visual resources, educational CDs, e-books as well as e-journals. IGIMS has an in-campus hostel for girls with two-bedded furnished rooms and provisions for geysers and safe drinking water. IGIMS promotes a healthy lifestyle and has provisions for both indoor and outdoor sports facilities for the students. Regular classes at IGIMS are conducted in spacious classrooms which are equipped with multimedia technology. There are multiple specialised laboratories equipped with the latest technology which students avail for their practical sessions. Some of the labs that can be availed are Biochemistry Lab, Hematology Lab, Microbiology Lab, Clinical Immunology Lab, Histopathology and Cytopathology Lab, Anatomy Lab, and Computer Lab.
IGIMS also has an Animal House approved by CPCSEA, providing hand on experience to the students. There are on-campus cafeteria, medical facility, auditoriums and an ATM at IGIMS along with a post office for the convenience of the students and staff of the Institute.

For Undergraduate Courses like MBBS, BPT, B.Optm, B.Sc with four specialisations, eligible candidates who have passed their 10+2 board examinations and have secured a valid rank in the entrance examinations of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG) for MBBS can apply for the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna during the counseling process, after which the shortlisted candidates need to verify their documents and pay the admission fees to ensure a seat.
