Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) (BHU), Varanasi  is a premier public technical university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was originally founded in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College, later it became the Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi under Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1968. The IIT-BHU Varanasi was declared a subsidiary of Indian Institute of Technology in 2012. IIT-BHU is AICTE approved.

IIT-BHU Varanasi has a total of sixteen departments, three inter-disciplinary schools and one Humanities and Social Sciences Section. The technical department offers Undergraduate B.Tech degrees in Ceramic Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Industrial Chemistry and more. They also offer a B.Arch degree in Architecture. All admissions for IIT-BHU Varanasi is screened through the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Mains and Advance. All applicants must have scored above the set cut-off every year to qualify for a B.Tech degree at IIT-BHU Varanasi. Additionally, for B.Arch degrees, applicants are required to clear the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) along with the JEE. Post which, applicants are required to fill out an online form on the IIT-BHU Varanasi website to carry their application forward. In order to be eligible for admission, applicants must have successfully completed a 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognised board.

IIT-BHU Varanasi offers both need and merit-based scholarships to 25% of undergraduate students.

Additionally, the IIT-BHU Varanasi offers a number of endowments, studentships, and reimbursement of mess charges. The students can apply for various state and government scholarships while studying in this institution.

The Training and Placement Office at IIT-BHU Varanasi supports the placement process for graduates of IIT-BHU Varanasi in addition to building a strong network with top organizations and industries to provide internship and employment opportunities to students. Over 200 organizations visit IIT-BHU Varanasi for campus interviews and placement. Core engineering industries, IT-enabled services, manufacturing sectors, consulting firms, financial institutions, management organizations, and R&D labs are among the industries that form the IIT-BHU network. The Placement Office also holds pre-placement talks to equip students with knowledge and skills required to excel in these interviews.

The faculty of IIT-BHU Varanasi are very supportive and helpful to their students, they are very careful about the whole learning process and use innovative teaching methods in their pedagogy. The institute is located within the BHU campus in Varanasi.

IIT-BHU Varanasi has a Main Library and five independent departmental libraries. The main library has a wide collection of books and journals across disciplines beyond engineering, and science. The library carries about 1,38,000 volumes of books, journals, theses, reports, and pamphlets. The Digital Library provides access to databases such as DELNET Database, PressReader, Derwent World Patents Database, TURNITIN /Ouriginal (URKUND). Students also get access to the central BHU library. The campus is filled with well-equipped smart classrooms, a cafeteria that serves quality food at affordable prices, students have access to the BHU campus’ large playground and a common gym with all the necessary amenities, a 24*7 emergency services, doctor-on-call and other medical services. IIT-BHU Varanasi provides separate boys and girls hostels which are Wi-Fi enabled, a functional mess, a common television, recreational area, laundry and security system.

Admission Procedure

Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi’s admissions are conducted online. To apply for their undergraduate degrees, candidates must meet all the required eligibility requirements of the course for which they candidate is applying. The candidate has to go through the online admission process on the website. Most importantly the candidates must get a valid Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) score in order to be admitted to B.Tech programmes. Also, candidates' National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced scores are used to consider admission to B.Arch. and dual degree programmes. While the admission criteria and eligibility differ from course to course, all students must have passed their 10+2 school leaving test from a recognised board of secondary education. Primarily admission to this institution takes place on the merit obtained in the aforesaid exams.

Candidates must fulfil all eligibility requirements for the course for which they are applying in order to apply for their postgraduate degrees. Candidates who have been shortlisted for M.Tech./M.Pharm. programmes based on a Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) / Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) score that is valid and higher than the required pass mark may be chosen based on their GATE/GPAT score, written test, interview, online counselling, or any combination of these as announced by the specific department or school. Written exams, online interviews, and online counselling will determine which applicants the department or school in question has chosen to shortlist for admission to Ph.D programmes.

Placements

The Training & Placement Office at Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi supports the placement process for graduates of the Institute in addition to working with top companies and institutions to offer internship and training programmes for students. The office collaborates with independent companies, corporations, and other organisations that choose graduate students from all fields of study through campus interviews. Along with managing other logistics, the Training and Placement Office offers the necessary infrastructure to hold interviews, assessments, and group discussions. Nearly 200 organisations visit the school to conduct campus interviews, and the Office engages with many different industries throughout the nation. Core engineering industries, IT-enabled services, manufacturing sectors, consulting firms, financial institutions, management organisations, and R&D labs are among the industries that contact the institute. Pre-Placement Talks are also held in this regard for mutual benefit. The Training and Placement Office makes announcements regarding job offers, interview dates, candidate selection, etc. A council made up of representatives of students from the undergraduate and graduate engineering programmes supports the placement office. Along with a set of unbreakable rules, the committee develops a broad policy framework each year. Implementing these policy decisions involves heavily involving student members.
