The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Berhampur (IISER Berhampur) was founded in 2016 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, as a Centre of Excellence for teaching and research in the field of basic sciences. With the aim of being a leading university dedicated to both high-quality teaching and top-level research in a fully integrated manner, IISER Berhampur seeks to foster both curiosity and creativity, setting a new standard for science education in India. The vision for IISER Berhampur includes the establishment of research institutes/centers of the highest caliber that combine teaching and education in basic sciences with advanced research.

Admissions at IISER Berhampur are being taken online. For a BS-MS degree students must pass (10+2) in Physics, and Chemistry, Mathematics and must qualify Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Advanced). Admissions are based on JEE- Advanced merit list, IISER Berhampur conducted an admission aptitude test every year IISER aptitude test (IAT). To applying a Ph.D. degree candidate must hold a master's degree in (M.S./M.Sc./M.Tech./MBBS) in a discipline. And students should have a valid National level examination like National Eligibility Test (NET)/Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) /UGC-JRF/CSIR-JRF/DBT (JRF A category). To applying a Ph.D. degree candidate must hold the score in a National Eligibility Test like -the Joint Admission test for Master (JAM), National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST), Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS).

The computer center is open 24/7 and is staffed by knowledgeable professionals who can assist students with any technical difficulties they may encounter. The library of IISER Berhampur has a collection of over 4100+ books that supplement the teaching, learning, and research of BS-MS programs and Ph.D. programs. The central library has subscribed to 2200+ international journals access through ACS, AMS, APS, IOPSciences, Springer, OUP, RSC, Wiley, and Nature Group. The library also provides access to e-books, e-journals, and other electronic resources. The sports facilities at IISER Berhampur include a fully equipped world-class fitness center, a yoga center, and various outdoor and indoor sports facilities. The fitness center is equipped with modern equipment and is staffed by certified fitness professionals who can help students develop personalized fitness plans. IISER Berhampur provides bus transportation to students from various locations in the city. IISER Berhampur has a medical facility that provides primary healthcare services to students and staff. The medical facility also conducts regular health check-ups and provides health education programs for students.

IISER Berhampur assists students to get scholarships under the "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" (KPVY). Additionally, according to the criteria established by the DST INSPIRE scheme, a small number of INSPIRE scholarships will be made available to applicants selected through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced.
