Established in 2016 by the Government of India under the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy, Visakhapatnam (IIPE Visakhapatnam) is on par with the IITs and IIMs and is a domain-specific Institute. The Parliament declared IIPE Visakhapatnam as an 'Institution of National Importance' by enacting the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy Act, 2017 (No.3 of 2018). The main areas of focus for research at IIPE Visakhapatnam are Shale Gas, Coal Bed Methane, Gas Hydrates, Conventional Energy Sources, Renewable Energy Sources, Storage, and the downstream activities of oil & gas.
IIPE Visakhapatnam admissions are being taken online. For applying Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree students must pass (10+2) in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and must qualify Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Advanced). For a Ph.D. degree, an applicant must have a Master's Degree in Science/ a degree equivalent to any of the above in a relevant subject with consistent a minimum of 60% marks.

Located in Visakhapatnam, IIPE Visakhapatnam provides an excellent infrastructure to its students. IIPE Visakhapatnam currently runs its academic operations from its temporary location. The permanent campus of IIPE Visakhapatnam is being developed in the scenic and natural surroundings of hills ranges in Andhra Pradesh's Anakapalli district. IIPE Visakhapatnam has well-furnished classrooms and a state-of-the-art computer lab for its students to get the best learning experiences. IIPE Visakhapatnam also has various departmental laboratories with all the necessary equipment for the students to carry out experiments for their research. The library at IIPE Visakhapatnam is also well-equipped with more than 30,000 books, 8,000 titles, international and national journals, international and national newspapers, and magazines. It also has a digital library facility with a total of 5.28 crores of e-resources. The hostel facility with a mess is also provided at IIPE Visakhapatnam. Additionally, a medical facility is also available for all the students of IIPE Visakhapatnam.
IIPE Visakhapatnam has developed a specific placement drive, that mainly focuses on career development and student training through an industry tour. The Career Development Cell, of IIPE Visakhapatnam, is very well to conduct efficient interview procedures at its temporary campus. Additionally, public-sector oil and gas firms including HPCL, IOCL, ONGC, and GAIL, Indian oil, Wipro offer internships through IIPE Visakhapatnam. The summer internships program provides students to gain practical experience before they leave the campus.

Admission Procedure
Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy in Visakhapatnam, admissions are being taken online. Admissions are based on JEE- Advanced merit list. For a PhD degree, an applicant must have a Master's Degree (M.Sc/ M.Tech/ MS/ ME) in Science/ a degree equivalent to any of the above in a relevant subject with consistent a minimum of 60% marks. OR An applicant must have a Master’s Degree (M.Tech/ MS/ ME/ M.Sc) in Engineering/Technology or a degree equivalent to any of the above in a relevant subject after qualifying for Graduation Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE ) with a minimum 60% marks. For consideration for an Institute Research Assistantship, candidates must have a valid Graduation Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE,) Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Eligibility Test (CSIR-NET) or NBHM score.
