Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM Calcutta), was established in 1961 as the first national institute for postgraduate studies and research in the discipline of Management. Students can pursue 3 postgraduate (PG), 1 diploma (DIP), and doctorate (PhD) courses at IIM Calcutta. The PG courses provide the degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA). Applications for admission to IIM Calcutta can be submitted online via their official website. Admission to the PG courses at IIM Calcutta is secured by candidates on the basis of their merit in graduation and Common Admission Test (CAT). For doctoral degree, admission is secured on the basis of the candidate's merit in postgraduation and National Eligibility Test (NET) / Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) / Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) / GATE.

The selection of the applicants for the postgraduate degree in management is made according to the merits secured by the candidates in their undergraduate degree courses from a recognised university along with the rank secured through the Common Admission Test (CAT).
Selection for the applicants for the doctoral degree course is made upon the merits secured by the students in their postgraduate degree course from a recognised university along with the ranks and merits secured through the National Eligibility Test (NET). For the selection of the applicants for the postgraduate course in Visionary Leadership Management, the selection is made upon the merits secured by the applicants in their undergraduate degree course in engineering and technology from a recognised university. The applicants for the executive degree management course must have a bachelor's degree from a recognised university along with a minimum of five years of working experience at an organization.
