Government College, Kottayam (GC Kottayam) located in the outskirts of City of Letters in Kerala, was established in the year 1972. The only government owned arts and science college in the Kottayam district is affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. It is recognised under the University Grants Commission [UGC]. The students of GC Kottayam are encouraged to be involved in several cultural and nature ware activities through the ample number of Clubs that are initiated by the students and supported by the college, e.g. Nature, Bird, Film, Tourism, dance, Literary, Health, etc. GC Kottayam also facilitates the students with National Cadet Corps [NCC] and National Service Scheme [NSS] practices regularly.
GC Kottayam is a residential campus, that emphasises in promoting green values inculcated by the ideas of nature conservation. The classrooms are spacious and has sufficient laboratories to conduct research works. The equipment of the laboratories are of superior quality that are regularly maintained, thus ensuring high functionality. It has booth physically printed library and digital access of library to facilitate students with wide range of study resources.

It is a home to a wide array of courses, ranging from undergraduate degrees like Bachelor of Arts [B.A.] in Economics, English and Political Science, etc; Bachelor of Science [B.Sc.] in Botany, Geology and Physics, etc; and Bachelor of Commerce [B.Com]. Postgraduate programmes are Master of Arts [M.A.] in Economics and Political Science, Master of Science [M.Sc.] in Geology, Physics, Industrial Chemistry and Master of Commerce [M. Com].
