Government College for Women (GCW), Thiruvananthapuram established in 1864, is affiliated with the University of Kerala and has been approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Being one of the oldest colleges for women in the nation, it's also the sixth oldest college in Kerala.

GCW, Thiruvananthapuram was established with the clear goal of providing women with modern and liberal higher education so that they can face the challenges of the world confidently and thereby become responsible individuals contributing to the betterment of society.

GCW, Thiruvananthapuram offers several undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the streams of arts, science, and commerce such as Economics, English, Commerce, Physics, Mathematics, Zoology, Statistics, and many more. Students can also pursue their doctorate degrees in the subjects taught at GCW, Thiruvananthapuram. Admission is conducted online, and candidates are selected based on merit and eligibility. For UG admission, Arts stream aspirants must pass 10+2 in any stream from a recognised university, Science stream aspirants must pass 10+2 with the relevant science subject as one of the subjects, and commerce aspirants must graduate 10+2 with commerce.

The faculty is tirelessly striving towards providing quality education with skill development. Under constant support and guidance, the students achieve excellence in academics. Faculty members serve as the convenors of the placement and career guidance cell at GCW, Thiruvananthapuram. Over the past five years, the Cell has organised campus interviews with top national and international businesses, and many final-year undergraduate and graduate students have found employment. The Career and Counseling cell mentors students on how to ace employment interviews at both national and international levels. The students are regularly updated about placement opportunities/job openings.

The Placement Cell conducts interviews, mock tests, and awareness sessions on how to face interviews and the selection processes. The Career Guidance Cell of GCW, Thiruvananthapuram meets the needs of students, identifies the skill sets necessary for applying for a job, and assists in guiding students in making career decisions, enhancing soft skills, and gaining knowledge about the numerous institutions that offer higher education.

Admission Procedure

Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram follows an online method of admission. Applicants to GCW, Thiruvananthapuram are selected on the basis of merit and eligibility criteria. GCW, Thiruvananthapuram offers Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Doctorate courses under the faculty of Science, Arts and Commerce. Aspiring B.A (Undergraduate) applicant to GCW, Thiruvananthapuram must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination from any recognized board in any stream. Aspiring B.Com applicants to GCW, Thiruvananthapuram must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination from any recognized board with Commerce subjects. Aspiring B.Sc applicants to GCW, Thiruvananthapuram must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination from any recognized board with respective Science subjects according to the concerned department. 

GCW, Thiruvananthapuram also offers a postgraduate degree ( M.A, M.Com, M.sc) and PhD degree with various specializations. For their Master's degree, candidates must qualify bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, and final admission is based on merit basis. And for their PhD degree candidate must qualify for an entrance examination UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR/NET with valid marks.
