Department of Jute and Fibre Technology, Kolkata (DJFT Kolkata) formerly, the Institute of Jute Technology was founded in 1951 jointly under the University of Calcutta and the Indian Jute Mill’s Association. This is the Technology department of the University of Calcutta established with the objective of catering education and training to fulfill the HRD [Human Resource Development] needs of the jute and allied fibre sector. DJFT Kolkata receives financial funds and project grants from national and international organisations like Mistry of Textile, Government of India UNDP [United Nations Development Programme], etc.

DJFT Kolkata not only takes its undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate degrees into consideration but only have been running short-term supervisor courses since 1967. The DJFT Kolkata building is typically located inside the Ballygaunge Science College campus [that is how the campus is known in the city of Kolkata, orally], which basically houses the science departments of the University of Calcutta. The infrastructure of this department has ample superior resources in their laboratories with enormous collections of exclusive types of equipment in each specialised lab of interest section. DJFT Kolkata has a separate Artisan Training Centre with teaching aids like OHP [overhead projector] screens, LCD projectors, and studentfriendly classrooms. The library indicates valued usefulness among the students.

DJFT Kolkata offers diverse courses starting from an undergraduate course of B. Tech in two subjects; M.Tech in Textile Technology (Technical Textiles), Ph. D. in Textile Technolgy to Post Graduate Diploma in Jute Technology and Management and 3-month Junior Level Supervisors with specific specialisations as short courses. The distinguished faculty at DJFT Kolkata encapsulates world-class pedagogic methods to their students in training students for the development of qualified technical manpower and training of mill personnel for the Indian Jute Mills. Admission Procedure

For Bachelors in B.Tech degree, the Department of Jute and Fibre Technology, Kolkata offers in the subjects of Jute and Fibre Technology and Jute Technology and solely in Jute Technology to the eligible students qualified in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) with 10+2 higher secondary. Master’s course is offered through an M. Tech degree in Textile Technology (Technical Textiles) to the student who should clear the common admission test or should qualify for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) with having a B. Tech. degree in disciplines that have connotations with the postgraduate subject. To enter the Ph.D. course in Textile Technolgy aspirants have to qualify for Ph.D. Admission Test (PAT) and might get a waiver of admission test if they have already qualified for NET, SET, JRF, GATE, and other examinations like that.

Apart from the regular courses DJFT Kolkata also offers PGD in Jute Technology and Management to eligible students having a B.Sc. degree in any stream of Science and short courses of Junior Level Supervisors [JLS] with specialisations in Spinning Preparatory, Spinning & Winding, and many more to students with minimum eligibility of having cleared secondary examinations.
