CEPT University, Ahmedabad (CEPTU Ahmedabad) was established by the Ahmedabad Education Society (AES) in 1962 with the founding of the School of Architecture (SA), which the Government of Gujarat funded. In 1972, the School of Planning (SP) was established with financial support from the Government of India (MHRD), the Government of Gujarat, and the Ford Foundation. The School of Building Science and Technology (SBST) and the School of Interior Design (SID) were established in 1982 and 1991, respectively, with a grant-in-aid from the Government of Gujarat. CEPTU Ahmedabad has always been an autonomous academic institution, free to develop its own educational programs and award its own diplomas upon completion of various programs of study recognized by the State of Gujarat and the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) - the statutory regulatory body for technical courses. From 2002-2005, CEPTU Ahmedabad was affiliated with the Hemachandracharya North Gujarat University at Patan, leading to the awarding of bachelor’s and master’s degrees to students upon completion of various programs. However, CEPTU Ahmedabad officially became a university by the Gujarat State Legislature Act of 2005, effective April 12, 2005, enabling the awarding of degrees under its own name. The University Grants Commission recognized CEPTU Ahmedabad under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 in February 2007.
