Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi (BAU Ranchi), was established in 1981, given the unique agricultural characteristics of the Chotanagpur plateau and the Santhal Parganas. The primary goal of BAU Ranchi is to develop regional technologies and workforce in agriculture, animal husbandry, and forestry for the agricultural development of Jharkhand's plateau region and the alleviation of poverty of tribal and other underdeveloped communities in the region. The Autonomous University is approved by the Indian Council of  Agricultural Research (ICAR).

Students can pursue 37 undergraduate (UG) courses, 25 postgraduate (PG) courses, and 19 doctorates (PhD) courses at BAU Ranchi. The UG courses are for the degrees of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Bachelor of Science (Honours), Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences (B.V.Sc), and Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc) in various agriculture and animal husbandry related subjects. The PG courses offer the degrees Master of Science (M.Sc), Master of Technology (M.Tech), and Master of Veterinary Sciences (M.V.Sc) in related fields to the UG courses. Admission to the aforementioned courses is based on merit, and the minimum eligibility for the UG courses is 10+2 from a science stream.

The highly qualified faculty at BAU Ranchi strive to create and disseminate knowledge maintaining the highest standards while pursuing excellence, innovations, and inclusiveness. BAU Ranchi also has a Counseling and Placement Cell which provides assistance for the students’ entries in the fields of research as well as in the fields of management and industry.

BAU Ranchi provides the necessary infrastructural support to ensure the all-around development of the students. The Library at BAU Ranchi has a large collection of books, theses, journals, magazines, and various other printed texts. The digital section of the Library offers members access to various e-resources, along with printing and photocopying facilities. Students are provided separate hostel accommodations for boys and girls at BAU Ranchi. Promoting a healthy lifestyle for the students, BAU Ranchi, has 4 sports fields, and a well-equipped gymnasium for the youngsters to avail. Regular classes at BAU Ranchi are conducted in spacious classrooms, while practical sessions take place in specialised labs, as well as 7 greenhouses, 4 glasshouses, 8 poly houses, and 2 mist chambers. The Wi-Fi-enabled Campus of BAU Ranchi also has a cafeteria and medical centre with medical officers and ambulance service for the students and staff to avail.

Admission Procedure

Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi, offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in agriculture, veterinary sciences, and animal husbandry, as well as forestry. Candidates must pass the HSC examination in the science stream to be eligible for UG admission at BAU Ranchi, and the final selection is based on an entrance exam. For PG admission at BAU Ranchi, candidates must have a bachelor's degree in the relevant subject, and the final selection is based on an entrance exam. BAU Ranchi also offers doctoral programs. Candidates for Ph.D. admission must have a master's degree.
