The Agricultural College and Research Institute (ACARI), Madurai was first established in 1965 as the Madurai Agricultural College, and then became a part of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and came to be known as ACARI, Madurai in 1980. Situated by the Madurai-Trichy National Highway at the foothills of the small mountain, Yanamalai, the sprawling green campus has become a favourite picnic spot for students in and around the city of Madurai.

The aim of ACARI, Madurai is to impart quality education in the fields of agriculture, catering to the requirements of the farmers of the state of Tamil Nadu, and facilitating research on crop improvement, production and protection.

ACARI, Madurai offers 1 undergraduate (UG), 10 postgraduate (PG) and 1 doctorate (PhD) course. The UG course is B.Sc (Hons) in Agriculture; the PG courses are M.Sc in Agronomy, Agricultural Economics, Plant Protection Entomology, Agricultural Extension Education, Agricultural Microbiology, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Seed Science and Technology, Soil Science, and Food and Nutrition; and the PhD course is in the area of Food and Nutrition. The courses are approved by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and ACARI, Madurai is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

ACARI, Madurai has the second largest campus under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and provides state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities to benefit the students. The Library at ACARI, Madurai has an automated facility through the Koha open-source library software. The Print Section of the Library has 69691 textbooks, reference books, peer-reviewed current journals, back volumes of journals, newspapers, annual reports and conference proceedings, competitive examination books, thesis, and back volumes. The Digital Library at ACARI, Madurai has e-books, e-journals and CDs. The library e-resources can be accessed by off-campus members as well. The students of ACARI, Madurai are accommodated in separate hostels for boys and girls. There are two hostels for boys and three hostels for girls at ACARI, Madurai. ACARI, Madurai stresses on the importance of sports and provides facilities for several indoor and outdoor games like football, cricket, badminton, ball badminton, basketball, volleyball, kho kho, kabaddi, hockey, table tennis and Chess.

ACARI, Madurai also provides facilities such as a swimming pool, indoor gymnasium as well as an athletic track. The academics at ACARI, Madurai are carried out in classrooms and course-specific laboratories along with a Computer Lab which has a seating capacity of 120 and high-speed internet connectivity. ACARI, Madurai also has seminar halls for conducting workshops and other official and non-official programs.

The Amenity Centre of ACARI, Madurai has modern cooking facilities and a dining capacity of 600 students. Apart from the dining facilities, the Amenity Centre also has shops for computers with printing and photocopying facilities, a fruits and juices shop, a tailoring shop, a bakery and a millets shop. Additional facilities at Agricultural College and Research Institute include an ambulance service for transporting students to nearby hospitals in case of a medical emergency.

Admission Procedure

Eligible candidates (co-ed) should apply for the course of B.Sc in Agriculture (Hons) at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai on the admission portal of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) and register themselves after duly filling up the forms. The students are shortlisted based on their merit on the previous academic examination after which they need to go through an online counseling procedure. The selected students are required to verify their documents and follow the subsequent admission procedure for securing a seat.
