World Dance Day set to be celebrated with fanfare today

Bhubaneswar, April 28: A series of innovative recitals have been scheduled for the World Dance Day that falls tomorrow.

The Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi will celebrate the day by staging classical dance forms from all over the country. A number of dancers will showcase their recitals at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya auditorium.

Jyotsna Jagannath from Bangalore will stage Bharatnatyam, while Sanjukta Sinha from Ahmedabad will perform Kathak and Niranjan Rout will stage Odissi.

"Odisha is known as the ultimate destination for dance, not only for being the cradle of Odissi, but also for various contemporary dancers who have won laurels at the national level. That is why we decided to celebrate the day by bringing together artistes from across the country here," said akademi secretary Dhira Mallick.

The noted artistes will interact with students from various dance institutes on various topics ranging from facial and body movements, footwork and various opportunities in classical dance.

Odissi dancer Roma Dasmohapatra will also conduct a number activities related to dance to mark the occasion. A debate and quiz on the history of dance are also on the agenda along with a workshop.

Contemporary dancers will also celebrate the day. A number of dance groups have planned flash mobs and seminars to mark the day.
