National Language Day
Students of DAV Public School, Pokhariput, Bhubaneswar, celebrated Hindi Divas on September 14 with an array of activities for promotion of the country’s national language. While they took an oath to work in unison to help spread the language, they also displayed their writings in Hindi through a wall magazine and a mini exhibition on their school campus.
They also read the day’s news in Hindi during the school assembly and recited poems to encourage fellow students to use the language. Hindi teachers of the school Rajashree Tarangini, Sakti Prasanna Mohanty and Manoj Kumar Nayak co-ordinated the activities. School principal Sujata addressed students and teachers on the occasion and urged them to promote the national language.
Battle of wits
Venkateswar English Medium School, Bhubaneswar, emerged champions in the city rounds of “Derek’s Faster Smarter Better Challenge”, an inter-school game show. The contest, which was conducted by quizmaster Derek O’ Brien, saw 30 teams from various Bhubaneswar schools engaged in a battle of wits.
The teams were judged on the basis of their mathematical, logical and analytical abilities as well as general knowledge skills. This was the second edition of the annual quiz competition where students from classes VI to X were eligible to take part.

Ozone awareness
Rabindra Vidya Niketan, Keonjhar, celebrated International Day for Protection of Ozone Layer on September 16 by organising various competitions among CBSE schools of the town. Students of Class VII threw light on the gradual increase in the size of the hole of ozone layer since its detection in the 1980s and stressed on the need for a healthy, pollution-free environment. They suggested various steps to prevent the depletion of the ozone layer. Class VI students crafted beautiful posters and raised awareness through slogans. The students also aired their thoughts and ideas on the need of conservation of the ozone layer in an essay-writing competition. English lecturers Ashok Shaw of DD College and Patel Mahanta of Gonasika College judged the various events.
Blood camp
DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar, organised a blood donation camp on its campus on September 14 as part of its silver jubilee celebrations. Students, teachers and guardians took part in the camp in large numbers, donating a total of 126 units of blood, which was later handed over to a local blood bank.
Awards rain
City schools have secured impressive positions in the Education World School Rankings 2013, based on a survey conducted by C-Fore, a Delhi-based marketing company, on 14 parameters, including faculty competence, school infrastructure, academic reputation, community service, co-curricular education and parental involvement, among others.
While Sai International School brought glory to the state by bagging the eighth rank in the “best school of the country” list in the day-cum-boarding schools category, Delhi Public School, Kalinga, was ranked as the best day co-ed school in Odisha. KIIT International School was place 14th at the national level, second in eastern India and first in the state as a boarding school.
The school authorities were awarded at an event in New Delhi on September 14. This year, the survey took into consideration a nationwide database of 5,779 respondents, from which the league table was prepared and subdivided into categories of day schools, day-cum-boarding schools, boarding schools and international schools to enable fair comparison.
