Kendrapara, Feb. 8: The Kendriya Vidyalaya here is facing a threat of closure.

With the district administration failing to keep up its commitment to provide a 15-acre plot for a new school building, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), the apex body of the central schools, has threatened to discontinue the admission process for the school from the coming academic session.

Things are no better in the neighbouring district of Jagatsinghpur where a proposed Kendriya Vidyalaya is yet to become operational.

The authorities concerned have not yet provided the land required to set up the school. This delay is being attributed to red tape.

Official sources said three other Kendriya Vidyalayas in Bhadrak, Nuapada and Nayagarh districts were also facing the same fate.

The KVS has shot off letters to all the district administrations concerned.

The commissioner of KVS has warned that the admission process would be stopped if the required land was not allocated.

In accordance with the Centre’s decision to set up such schools in every district across the country, the Kendriya Vidyalaya was established in Kendrapara in August 2010. Since then, it has been functioning from a temporary campus.

“The district administration had given an undertaking to provide a temporary campus and later allot about 15 acres of government land free of cost for the permanent building of the school. However, the land has not been allotted yet. The functioning of the school is being adversely affected because of the poor infrastructure,” said Bijoy Kumar Parida, principal of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kendrapara.

He said the existing infrastructure was inadequate for accommodating 400 students and to provide them with a good academic ambience.

“The guardians and parents are also aggrieved about this. We badly need the land for a permanent building. But nothing is being done towards this end,” he said.

The district administration, however, said they would soon allocate land for the central school.

“The administration is not dilly-dallying. A suitable plot has been earmarked for the school at Barimula in the outskirts of the town. The proposal is being sent to the revenue divisional commissioner for approval,” said Kendrapara collector Pradipta Kishore Pattnaik.

Delay in land allocation has also held the Jagatsinghpur Kendriya Vidyalaya to ransom with classes yet to begin. Jagatsinghpur collector Narayan Chandra Jena said: “We have requested the KVS to start the school from the coming academic session. Space is being provided temporarily for it and suitable land has been located.”
