Bhubaneswar, Feb. 26: Odisha all-rounder Paresh Patel will be the second cricketer from the state, after Biplab Samantray, to play for the Deccan Chargers in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) beginning April 4.

Odisha Cricket Association secretary Ashirbad Behera confirmed Patel’s inclusion in the Hyderabad-based team for Rs 30 lakh for one season.

“The officials of the Deccan Chargers have given their word on Patel, who would be signed for the same amount that has been offered to Biplab,” said Behera, adding that since the stylish southpaw was now in Calcutta, the formality of signing the contract would take place within a few days.

However, Patel, 26, who has represented the India Red side in the Challenger’s Trophy, refused to comment on his inclusion. “I have been hearing about this since last afternoon, but I can’t be sure until I sign the papers,” he told The Telegraph over phone from Calcutta.

Incidentally, the choice of Odia matinee idol Anubhav Mohanty as the brand ambassador of the franchise for the two matches in Cuttack has been confirmed by both the actor and Behera.

“Deccan Chargers will play two matches in Cuttack, which is my home town and I am thrilled to be a part of the IPL,” said Anubhav. The actor met the CEO of the Chargers, Venkat Reddy, yesterday and discussed the issue of endorsement. The team will play against Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders on April 19 and April 22, respectively, at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

Patel, a left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox bowler, was the second most expensive player after Biplab in the first edition of the Odisha Premier League.
