Bhubaneswar, May 4: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik today hinted at a revamp in his party structure with some ministers to be drafted in for organisational work. He also said that the BJD was well prepared to checkmate the BJP in the state.
When newspersons asked him if he would rule out a ministry rejig at this stage, Naveen replied: "No, I will not!"
The speculation is that the chief minister would ask some young ministers to take organisational responsibilities and also drop some who failed to come up to expectations in the recently held panchayat polls and have fared badly during the last two years.
The BJD is aware of the BJP's focus on Odisha especially in the wake of its good showing in the panchayat polls where it made major gains at the cost of both the Congress and the BJD. The BJP recently organised its two-day national executive meeting in Bhubaneswar to send a message to party workers that Odisha was important for the central party leadership.
However, Naveen today said: "I can assure you we can counter it (BJP) very well. We are a very strong party. Many of our ministers and members have met me and volunteered to work to strengthen the party."
Besides going for a revamp in the party structure, Naveen is also considering bringing back some expelled leaders to the party fold. However, he has only dropped hints and has not mentioned any names.
Asked if Bijoy Mohapatra, who is now in the BJP, will be brought back, Naveen said that the party would think of it on a "case-to-case basis".
Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda, who had earlier been critical of the party's functioning and was accused of trying to spilt the party, today welcomed the move but cautioned the leadership that a conspiracy was being hatched to oust some leaders from the party.
"I welcome Naveen's decision. In the past, some good leaders had been a victim of conspiracy and left the party. It will be good for the party if they come back," he said.
