Bhubaneswar, June 17: The development authority has asked officials of BDA City Centre, popularly known as Nicco Park, to submit safety reports every quarter after checking the rides in the park.
The decision was taken in the wake of last Sunday's mishap in which three girls were injured after a car in one of the rides derailed.
"Following the recent mishap, we have asked the officials to submit safety reports every quarter after checking the rides," said chairman of Bhubaneswar Development Authority, Krishan Kumar.
The amusement park is one of the favourite hangout zones for city residents with around 400 people visiting the place every day. It has as many as 17 rides for adults and children.
The incident took place at 3pm on Sunday when the girls were on the water chute. Saraswati Sethi, Priyanka Mohanty and Sraddhanjali Parida, all Plus Two students from Sailshree Vihar, were rushed to the Capital Hospital for treatment.
An eyewitness had said the car was coming down when it lost balance and the girls fell into the water pool.
"As soon as the car derailed, the girls fell into the water pool," said the eyewitness.
Around 500 visitors were inside the amusement park when the mishap took place.
The 39-ft high water chute has two peaks. The car goes through a downward slope and then moves up again. The total length of the track is 180meters. At a time, around six to eight persons can take the ride for 100 seconds.
Following the incident, visitors have also demanded regular inspection and maintenance of rides.
"Mishaps in parks cannot be taken lightly. Three years ago, 17 people were injured in accidents in an amusement park in Calcutta. The rides in BDA City Centre are very old and need proper maintenance," said Arijit Das, a visitor.
Administrative officer of BDA City Centre Mahendra Kumar Nanda said they had been inspecting the rides on a daily basis. "The maintenance of rides is being done on a regular basis and it is also being inspected by a third party," said Nanda.
Nicco Park, the first amusement park in the state was set up in 1998 as a joint venture between the BDA and the Nicco group.
However, Nicco was replaced in the joint venture with Suntech City Private Limited in 2007.
