Guwahati: A new addition was made to the war memorial here, a P20 surface-to-surface missile of Indian Navy, on Monday on the occasion of 46th Navy Day.

The missile, which was extensively used by the Indian Navy to attack Karachi harbour during the 1971 war, was unveiled by cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma here on Monday.

The missile was gifted by the Indian Navy.

Sarma said he felt privileged to pay tribute to the Indian Navy by unveiling the missile on Navy Day.

"The missile was unveiled on Navy Day since the date commemorates the launch of Operation Trident, a devastating attack on Pakistan's naval headquarters of Karachi during the 1971 war," said Brig. (retd) N. D. Joshi, director of Sainik Welfare, Assam.

He said this missile was used by the navy on December 4, 1971, to destroy frontline destroyers of the Pakistani Navy.

"The P20 missile has a range of 110km and carries a 350-kg warhead with an onboard radar navigation system," Joshi said.

A MiG 27 fighter jet used in the Kargil War and a tank used in 1971 war were also on display at the war memorial located on the banks of Dighalipukhuri, which was inaugurated by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on the occasion of the 70th Independence Day last year.

The jet was gifted by the Indian Air Force and the tank by the army.

The war memorial was built by Rajya Sainik Board with the help of the state government.

"It is a source of inspiration for the younger generation to join the armed forces and it also reminds defence personnel that the country has not forgotten their sacrifice and gallant act," Joshi said.
