Guwahati: The oldest momo outlet in the city, Momo Ghar, will celebrate its silver jubilee with a three-day momo festival at Lakhidhar Borah field opposite Dighalipukhuri here from Friday.

Visitors can taste at least nine types of momos at the festival.

Momo Ghar, the brainchild of Tapan Kumar Baruah, who hails from Tezpur, has steadily grown into one of the well-known and popular food outlets in the city since 1993, especially among the youths.

Momos are a type of South Asian dumpling, native to Nepal and Tibet. The dish is believed to be of Tibetan origin and has spread to other countries. Street vendors and food carts selling momos are commonplace on most street corners here.

"I had my first momo on a trip to Shillong and instantly fell in love. In those days, very few people in Guwahati knew what a momo was. So, I decided to prepare momos myself and invited my friends over to taste. It turned out to be a huge hit. It was then that I decided to start my own momo outlet," Baruah said on Wednesday.

The celebrations will include live performances by popular city-based bands like Celestial Way, Lateral and Swadhyay.

A momo-eating competition will also be held on Sunday. Those interested in taking part in the event can register on Friday at the venue.

There will also be an art competition for children of different age groups on Saturday where winners will receive certificates and prize money.
