Guwahati, Jan. 24: Dispur, in commemoration of Republic Day, has remitted the sentences of certain categories of prisoners who have been convicted by courts (other than court martials) having original jurisdiction in Assam and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment.

Prisoners with sentences above a year will be remitted 30 days, those with sentence above six months up to one year will be remitted 15 days, those with sentence above three months up to six months will be remitted 10 days and those with sentence above one month up to three months will be remitted five days. The order will come into effect from Sunday.

Pension

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi today announced a hike in the monthly pension for freedom fighters in Assam on the occasion of Republic Day.

The amount has been hiked from the existing Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 per month as a recognition of their contribution towards the nation. The pension hike will be effective from the current month, Gogoi said.
