Guwahati, April 20: Ramesh Pathak, father of Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Manikut Pathak who was murdered in 2014, has moved Gauhati High Court seeking a CBI probe into his death.
Manikut, 43, an ACS officer of the 1997 batch, who held the post of a district gazetteer, was found murdered at his Hatigaon residence in the city on September 11, 2014.
Dissatisfied with the progress of police investigation into the murder, the victim's father has approached the high court for a CBI probe.
Pathak's counsel Jiten Payeng told The Telegraph that his client has sought an investigation by the CBI or any such investigation agency into his son's murder under the supervision of the high court.
"After hearing the petition, a single-judge bench of Justice Hrishikesh Roy today issued notices to the Assam government and state police, seeking their response as to why the case should not be handed over to the CBI or any such agency. They have been asked to furnish their replies within four weeks," Payeng said.
"The police were also asked to submit a report on the current status of its investigation into the murder," he said.
He said Pathak has moved the high court since he had lost faith in the investigation conducted by the police.
"It will be two years since the murder but the police are yet to submit the chargesheet in the case," Pathak said.
"The police investigation has come to a standstill and I was kept in the dark about the present status of the investigation. When I met the top police officials, including city police commissioner Mukesh Agrawal, the only thing I was told was that the investigation was progressing in the right direction," he said.
Pathak, a retired professor of Assamese at Cotton College, rued that on September 27, 2014, the police had apprehended Purnima Gowala, the prime accused in the murder, and questioned her for about five hours. But, surprisingly, she managed to escape from the lock-up at the all-women police station in Panbazar around 2am under mysterious circumstances. Purnima is still at large.
"I also suspect that the post-mortem report was manipulated and had sought a review of the report. But my request, apparently, fell on deaf ears," he said.
So far, the police have arrested three persons - Pranjit Das, Utpal Boro and Jitu Mahanta - in connection with the murder.
"Even after so many months, police have not yet been able to establish the motive behind the murder," Pathak said.
