Judgment defered in Ghose case

The Court of Special Judge on Friday deferred judgment on the Sanjay Ghose murder case till Wednesday. The trial had begun on December 16, five years after the abduction and subsequent murder of the social worker. hose’s wife Sumita was the first to take the stand as a prosecution witness. The boatman who ferried Ghose and four Ulfa cadre to the sandbank of Rabisapuri the day he went missing also gave his statement.

Rebels arrested

Four Ulfa activists were arrested from Sonitpur’s Biswanath Chariali in a joint operation by the army and police recently. They are Beena Hazarika, Dhiren Bora, Purna Hazarika and Nadi Bora.

Trader freed

Jintu Singh, owner of a firm selling citronella and eucalyptus products, who was abducted on August 19 from Tinsukia district has returned home safely. He has told the Pengery police that five persons had abducted him. He is being questioned at the Digboi police station.

Ex-officer dead

Girish Chandra Goswami, 72, former director of the Centre for High Technology in the petroleum ministry and a retired top official of Digboi Refinery, passed away on Friday after prolonged illness. His last rites have been performed at the Nabagraha crematorium.

RBI scheme

The Reserve Bank of India, Guwahati, has introduced the high-value clearing system under which high-value cheques (Rs 1 lakh and above) presented at the branches up to 11 am will be cleared the same day. The amount can be withdrawn the next day. The facility is available at 33 branches of 20 banks.

Plea to students

Assam Governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajay Singh on Friday urged Dibrugarh University to collectively work for the uplift of the university. Gen. Singh, who is currently on a tour of Upper Assam, called upon the students to stay away from politics and concentrate on studies.

Price slash

The Nagaland government on Wednesday decided to slash prices of petrol and diesel in the state. The new rates will come into effect on September 1. The price of petrol will come down from Rs 30.38 to Rs 29.52 per litre, while diesel will be sold at Rs 18.49 per litre, reduced from Rs 19.07 per litre. Taxes on lubricants and medicines have also been slashed.
