12 die in road accidents

Altogether 12 people died and 90 others were injured in separate road accidents in Assam on Monday. Nine people died and 27 were seriously injured when a bus (AS-14 3921) overturned near Tuniapool in Abhayapuri of Bongaigaon district. woman, Damyanti Deka, died and 55 others injured when their bus (AS-153679) turned turtle at Sarukhethri in Barpeta district. A cyclist was killed on the spot when he was hit by a bus at Patsala. One person died and eight were injured when a tractor rammed into a tempo in Nalbari.

Bandh

Normal life was paralysed in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts due to a 24-hour Upper Assam bandh, called by the All-Assam Matak Yuvachattra Sanmilan on Monday demanding 100 per cent reservation of jobs in central government undertakings in the state.

Police meet

Various competitions for the dog squads will be the main attraction at the five-day 48th All India Police Duty Meet, which will get under way at the Police Training College in Dergaon on Tuesday.

Employment

The ministry of rural development recently released one lakh metric tonnes of wheat to Assam under special component of Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana to be utilised for creation of additional wage employment in 23 districts of the state.

Demand

The All Nyishi Student?s Union has demanded the resignation of Arunachal Pradesh home minister Jarbom Gamlin on moral grounds for his ?failure? in containing criminal activities in Itanagar.

Union election

The Southwest Khasi Hills circle of Khasi Students Union will hold the first general election for 2005-07 on January 22 next year for different posts. Forms will be distributed from January 5 to 10 at the students? union offices.

Meeting

The second meeting of town official language implementation committee was held in Shillong recently. Altogether 65 officers from various central government offices, and banks attended the meeting which discussed the implementation of official language annual programme for 2004-05.
