Ulfa leader arrested in Barpeta

The women’s wing of the Ulfa was dealt a major blow when its organisational secretary Bhomita Talukdar alias Deepali was arrested by the army from Jangrinpara village in Fatimabad of Barpeta district. he was apprehended from a house during a search operation. Talukdar is the wife of hardcore Ulfa militant Arun Mahanta who has been involved in subversive activities in Lower Assam.

Compensation

Assam revenue minister Mathias Tudu has informed the Assembly that Rs 3.35 crore is pending for payment of compensation to persons whose land was acquired under the Zamindari Act in Karimganj district.

Militant killed

A Bangladeshi militant, working for the Achik National Volunteers’ Council, was killed in an encounter with the police on Wednesday night near Angratoli in South Garo Hills district. He has been identified as Titu R. Marak.

Rebel shot dead

An NDFB militant was killed by the army in the Kauli area of Nalbari district. On being challenged, the rebel had lobbed a few grenades and opened fire. Army personnel retaliated, killing him. Two Chinese grenades were recovered. The body was handed over to Kumarikata police station.

Bus service

Transport minister Anjan Dutta has said that there are no plans to ply the circular city bus from Kacharighat via Nepali Mandir and Lalganesh to Kacharighat. Such a service would be considered only on public demand, he added.

Officers’ meet

General officer commanding of Bengal area, Maj. Gen. Zushah, met Lt Gen. H.S. Kanwar, director-general of the Assam Rifles, in Shillong to discuss the problems being faced by different states of the region. They also discussed remedial actions.

Traders looted

Dacoits decamped with Rs 2 lakh in cash looted from jute traders coming from Nagarbera village in Dhubri district. In another incident, Abdus Sattar of Chirakhowa village was beheaded by Dildar Ali over a land dispute on Thursday.

Mizoram move

The Mizoram government has undertaken a census of foreigners living in the state following the rape of a minor allegedly by a Myanmarese national on July 17.
