8 rebels surrender in Assam

Eight militants surrendered to the army in Assam on Monday. Official sources said the six Ulfa and two Muslim United Liberation Front of Assam activists laid down arms before Brig. A.K. Gulati of the 181 mountain brigade at Laipuli. rig. Gulati welcomed the rebels into the mainstream. The militants deposited several small arms and ammunition to the army.

Slogan-writing

The North Assam Chamber of Commerce and Industry is organising a slogan-writing contest to showcase Tezpur as a tourist destination. The best slogan writer will get Rs 1,000 and the prizes will be conferred at the Tezpur festival.

Art exhibition

Ongkar, Centre for Creative Arts, a Jorhat-based organisation, has organised the first All Assam Amateur Artists’ art exhibition, 2004, to discover hidden talents. The exhibition will be held at Ongkar Art Gallery on January 10.

Hemp seized

Sleuths of the BSF intelligence wing have recovered 10 kg of hemp from a shop in Karimganj. The hemp was recovered from the shop of Abdul Kalam, who tried to flee but was caught later. The hemp, found under several bundles of second-hand clothes, is valued at Rs 1,000 per kg and was meant to have been smuggled to Bangladesh where it was to be sold at 2,800 taka per kg.

Farmers’ card

The Lakhimi Gaonlia Bank organised a daylong seminar on kissan credit card in Jagiroad recently. District administration officials stressed on the need to promote the scheme and form self-help groups for welfare of rural society.

Social award

The Upendra Nath Brahma Trust has adopted a resolution to institute an award called U.N. Brahma Soldier of Humanity for persons serving the poor and the downtrodden. The award will consist of Rs 25,000 in cash and a citation. The trust will declare the name of the recipient in February. A five-member jury will be constituted for the purpose every year.

Grievances

The Dibrugarh district administration has fixed the 15th of the month as the date for settlement of all public grievances placed before the government departments. Deputy commissioner Niraj Verma has instructed the heads of every department to initiate steps to settle the grievances.
